Maxime Cottencau has deep roots in the village of Buxy, located in the Montagny area of the Cote de Chalonnaise region. His family had been farmers there for generations, an area that is also the heart of Montagny and a long time favorite wine among local monks. After three years of working with some of Burgundy’s most elite talent, and contrary to his family’s tradition, he decided to start his own domain and bottle his own wine instead of selling. Like Vincent Dureuil, his mentor, he makes wines that speak of a clear sense of place while maintaining organic farming. Keep a lookout for Maxime; he has only just begun his winemaking journey.
This Chardonnay comes from vines 15 years and older in limestone soils that is designated as Montagny Premier Cru in the Cote de Chalonnaise. The wine is aged in Chassin barrels, a cooperage from the Rully appellation just north of Montagny, where the barrels are made in small quantities. 30% of the barrels used are new, with an additional six months in tank. Just 125 cases were produced.
