Clos Figueras, Priorat 'Serras del Priorat' 2021
Regular price $35.00 Save $-35.00Variety: Garnacha, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah
The year was 1997. A world-renowned winemaker had just shown Christopher Cannan and his wife, Charlotte, an abandoned vineyard just north of the Gratallops called “Figueres.” That same day, the entire Cannan family piled into their car and followed the winemaker, post-haste, to Barcelona. At a simple café, the Cannan’s purchased the 100-hectare estate. Initially, the terrain of the previously abandoned vineyards had to be prepared for planting. (A nearby grove of century-old olive trees needed to be re-worked as well.) Both undertakings were just the beginning of what would become the Cannan family’s quest. They traveled extensively in their spare time to work under some of the best winemakers in the world. Today, their combination of passion for the property and skill in the cellar sets these wines above the rest.
The Serras del Priorat is a younger expression of the Priorat style with a fresh fruitness; the wine is ready to drink, though has age potential for another ten years. This is a fine introduction to Priorat and the rest of Christopher Cannan’s wines.

Peybonhomme-Les Tours, Quintessence de Peybonhomme Premieres Cotes de Bordeaux 2019
Regular price $30.00 Save $-30.00Variety: Merlot, Malbec
From the same Bordeaux house that brought us Château La Grolet. Even though Château Peybonhomme Les Tours began six generations ago in 1895, this generation begins with the union of two humans of different wine-related backgrounds. Jean-Luc Hubert descended from a long line of sailors who navigated the Gironde river utilizing “scow” boats to transport wine. Alternatively, Catherine came from a long line of winemakers, her great grandfather having acquired Peybonhomme in 1890. Both of their ancestors worked extensively with one another making and transporting wine, unbeknownst to them the union that would one day happen. The kids have grown and now assist in making beautiful, natural wines and following in their parents’ footsteps.
The Malbec variety was originally a Bordeaux blending grape, but has often been overshadowed by Cabernet and Merlot. Peybonhomme has embraced this variety using their biodynamic principles. It is clear through the name “Quintessence” that the wine exudes perfection and quality.

Fattoria Corzano e Paterno, Toscana Rosso 'Il Corzano' 2019
Regular price $45.00 Save $-45.00Variety: Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot
Wendel Gelpke, a Swiss architect, fell madly in love with these romantic hillsides. The Corzano property was purchased back in 1969, and then the neighboring property of Paterno in 1974. These hillsides are separated from the Chianti Classico subzone by the Via Cassia, a road that runs parallel to the river Pisa. Farming here has always been organic and her Sardinian sheep herd roams the rows to naturally fertilize the vines; talk about sustainability. As is classic for the area, the properties produce mainly Sangiovese. Wendel and the family own and operate the winery, and keep very occupied by making their own cheese and olive oil.
A Super Tuscan at its core, “Corzano” shows off the handpicked fruit from the Corzano hillside. It blends the traditional Sangiovese and the modern Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot together. Ageing takes place for about 26 months in oak barriques.

Ashes & Diamonds, Red Hen Vineyard 'No.1' 2016
Regular price $110.00 Save $-110.00Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon
At first glance, “Ashes and Diamonds” only brushes the surface of what the winery truly represents. The story—or journey rather—begins in the autumn of 2013 when Kashy Khaledi (son of winemaker Darioush Khaledi) was a creative media executive at Capitol Records, the “ideal job.” In the midst of a lengthy creative stump, Khaledi would often turn to old films for inspiration. He found one that shifted the course of his life—the 50s Polish film Ashes and Diamonds. A dream started to take shape; Khaledi threw himself into researching the viticulture and enology that shaped California’s wine culture. His quest for joint ventures began; he teamed up with Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden, farming vineyards in Napa Valley in the pursuit of balanced wine.
This wine is farmed and made by famed Napa winemaker Diana Snowden. The fruit is sourced from four different parcels in the Oak Knoll district. This wine is an ode to old school Napa where the wines have a true sense of place.

Fratelli Alessandria, Barolo 2019
Regular price $68.00 Save $-68.00Variety: Nebbiolo
Fratelli Alessandria is one of the stars of Verduno. The Alessandria family – owner Gian Battista, his wife Flavia, brother Alessandro, and son Vittore – lovingly produce a robust range of Piedmont specialty wines from start to finish. The farmer of the group, Gian’s philosophy is “the best wine comes from a great vineyard.” Located in the town of Verduno, in the commune of Barolo, the property has operated as a winery since the early 19th century. The wines were winning prizes as early as 1843. The original Alessandria brothers (fratelli) purchased the property in 1870. There is a deep understanding of how to work the vines in the marl soils they call “Sant’Agata,” a mixture of silt, limestone and sand. The Alessandria family first released their wine in 1978. Their style has always been classic, along with the grapes of the region; they never shifted towards a modernist hand.
This Barolo showcases the harmony of the blending style that is classic to the region. Today’s Barolo are more often made into a cru style, this bottle is a blend of several vineyards from Monforte d’Alba and Verduno. It is aged and cellared in the winery’s standard way: three years in Slavonian oak, two months in steel, and six months in bottle.

Louis Barruol, Cote-Rotie Besset 2015
Regular price $100.00 Save $-100.00Variety: Syrah
14 generations of winemaking! Conventionally a ‘generation’ is defined as thirty years, so 14 generations is close on 420 years. That’s a long, long time to make wine. You tend to learn a thing or two. Louis is anxious to preserve the old traditions of winemaking in Cote Rotie, from helping other negociants and producers to foster the growth of ancient strains of the Syrah grape, to fighting to keep corporate interests out of the best parcels of these crus, perhaps the most sought-after region in the Northern Rhone. Pencil lead and blackcurrant open up the fireworks for this muscular wine, and the plum and ripe black cherries rush into the fray. Familiar hints of smoke and pepper finish with elegant, silky tannins in this most incredible Cote Rotie.

Alain Graillot, Crozes-Hermitage 'La Guiraude' 2020
Regular price $80.00 Save $-80.00Variety: Syrah
Every wine region in the world has its benchmark producers. These are the producers that year after year release top tier wines with a consistent voice that is evident in each bottle. These producers are an inspiration to younger producers throughout the world. Alain Graillot is a classic example, presiding over 50 acres of 30+ year-old vines in Crozes-Hermitage, just off the powerful hill of Hermitage in the Northern Rhone. Graillot has always focused on the pursuit of greatness. Quality comes first. He passed in 2022, though his voice lives on with both of his sons, Antoine and Maxime, who picked up their father's torch back in 2008.
From his wines, Alain would select certain barrels to create a limited label known as “La Guiraude,” which he considers his best. He has been a guiding light for quality that every neighboring producer aims to emulate.

Thierry Pillot, Volnay 1er Santenots 2020
Regular price $110.00 Save $-110.00Variety: Pinot Noir
Thierry Pillot is the fourth generation of the Pillot legacy in the legendary Côtes de Beaune of southern Burgundy. Even though the domain began with Thierry’s great grandfather—Jean-Baptist —the domain was named after Paul Pillot—Thierry’s father. Jean-Baptiste was a barrel maker by trade and began focusing on his vines full time in 1900; the estate was born then. Today the estate is run by the energetic Thierry, who spends most of his time in the vineyards, but is a non-interventionist in the cellar with discreet usage of new wood. The family are artists in the cellar when it comes to oak usage; it is very well integrated into the wines. Thierry is one of the finest winemakers in the Côtes de Beaune; if one should come across any of his bottles, don’t hesitate to snatch them up.
Notice that the label is under Thierry Pillot's name instead of his father's domaine name. This Volnay is from 45+ year old vines and undergoes 50% whole cluster fermentation, giving the wine a savory note and adding more aromatics. This is aged in barrel, 25% of which is new.

Fratelli Alessandria, Barolo 'Gramolere' 2019
Regular price $98.00 Save $-98.00Variety: Nebbiolo
While most of the domain's vineyards are located in Verduno, the Gramolere cru is located in the neighboring Monforte d’Alba. It’s a different expression of Barolo than expected from Fratelli Alessandria; a wine of structure and character.
