At first glance, “Ashes and Diamonds” only brushes the surface of what the winery truly represents. The story—or journey rather—begins in the autumn of 2013 when Kashy Khaledi (son of winemaker Darioush Khaledi) was a creative media executive at Capitol Records, the “ideal job.” In the midst of a lengthy creative stump, Khaledi would often turn to old films for inspiration. He found one that shifted the course of his life—the 50s Polish film Ashes and Diamonds. A dream started to take shape; Khaledi threw himself into researching the viticulture and enology that shaped California’s wine culture. His quest for joint ventures began; he teamed up with Steve Matthiasson and Diana Snowden, farming vineyards in Napa Valley in the pursuit of balanced wine.

At first glance, “Ashes and Diamonds” only brushes the surface of what the winery truly represents. Grand Vin #2 comes from the A&D Vineyard in the Oak Knoll District of Napa. A&D is a Bordeaux style blend of the classic Merlot and Cabernet Franc in a seamless marriage of freshness, fruit and minerality. It is aged for 20 months in 35% new French oak barrels and bottled below 14% alcohol, which is almost unheard of these days in California red wines.

Mayacamas has stood the test of time with its historic vineyards and cellar set into the Mt. Veeder hillside at a staggering 2500 feet in elevation. The winery was founded in 1889 by a German immigrant couple. While the property has changed hands several times, the recent successor has taken extreme measures to retain a sense of finesse, concentration and balance. As recent as 2012, the winery has taken a step back by learning to not lean on new oak usage, instead opting for their used older casks. They continue to replant with new vines while organic and dry-farming remain a focus. Maycamas remains a benchmark producer, “the last man standing” from the glory days of California winemaking.

This is another impeccable vintage from Mayacamas. You could open now, but ideally you should give this another 5 or 10 before pulling the cork.

Steve Matthiasson is a California pioneer. Daring to break Napa tradition, Steve and his wife Jill have planted rare, ancient Italian grapes though recognize that Napa loves all the well-known international grapes. A Matthiasson tasting experience, laid out on the picnic table that separates their home from the winemaking operation (with their dog and at least one son stopping by!) shows instantly how the couple reveres the place they farm together. This is real California wine and Matthiasson’s wines are where California wine is headed. Steve Matthiasson is a six-time nominee for a James Beard award, a serious achievement in the wine industry. He has also been named “Winemaker of the Year” by both Food & Wine Magazine and The San Francisco Chronicle. Steve and Jill are long time friends and mentors to Hart & Cru. 

This is the first vintage released of this single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard sits on a rocky volcanic knoll, with soil of gray volcanic ash and rylolite (compressed ash) rocks. South-western facing and close to the mouth of the Napa Valley, the vineyard benefits from hot days and cool nights. Fruit is fermented at low temperatures in small, open-top tanks and punched down by hand one to three times per day, followed by 20 months of aging in both new and used French oak.
