Variety: Pinot Noir
“It’s hard to get good grapes from vines planted on a cement highway.” Winemaker at Domaine Arlaud, Cyprien, states his reasoning for not using tractors in the vineyard, as part of his conversion of all the family properties to biodynamic vineyards, starting in 1997 when he took over. Dom. Arlaud is bottling some of the more lively and exciting Burgundies today. Their naturalistic approach continues in the winery where minimal intervention is done, and the fruit and terroir of Burgundy are allowed to speak for themselves. If ever there was a voice that should speak without interference, it is that of Burgundy. Red currant, strawberries, tilled earth and just a whiff of fresh summer herbs scintillate in the Roncevie, an absolute steal of a value compared to most of its other competitors.
Domaine Arlaud makes this excellent bottle of juice that was once classified as Gevrey-Chambertin, but now is classified as Bourgogne Rouge. This is one of the best examples of how Bourgogne Rouge embraces quality above its rank with all the appeal.
